Included: Accommodations at selected hotel, breakfast and lunch, guided fishing, ground transfers from Merida to Campeche (2 hours), fishing license, and local taxes
Not Included: Airfare to and from Mexico, evening meals, guide gratuities and any additional activities.
Travel Logistics:
Arrival Information: To get to Campeche you will need to make travel arrangements to and from Merida, Mexico.
Getting to the Lodge: In Merida you will be met by a driver who will take you to your accommodations in Campeche, approximately two hours away. Your head guide will meet you at your hotel to help you check into your room and explain the fishing program.
Departure Information: On your departure day your driver will take you back to Merida two hours before you scheduled departure.
Note: Guests may also choose to fly in and out of Cancun. For an additional fee our outfitter can make arrangements for the five hour shuttle.
Documentation Requirements:
You must have a valid US passport to enter Mexico. This will be used to obtain your Mexican Tourist Card. Keep your copy of the card with you during your stay. No inoculations are required. Expect to pay a departure tax of approximately US $20 when leaving Mexico. Many times this tax is already included in your ticket so check with your ticket agent.
Currency:
The official currency of Mexico is the Peso. You should plan on paying for all additional expenses except guide gratuities in Pesos. We find it easiest to get Pesos from ATM’s that are readily available at local banks. Guides readily accepts US$ for gratuities.
Travel Cash:
On your trip to Campeche you will always have access to local banks and ATM’s. For this reason it is not necessary to travel with an abundance of cash.
Gratuities:
Guide gratuities range from $30 to $50 per guide per day. Hotel bell boys are used to $2 for carrying luggage from and to rooms. Shuttle drivers for Merida to Campeche $5 to $10; restaurant waiters, 10 -15% of the bill.
Fishing Licenses:
Fishing licenses are included and your guide will issue your license when you arrive.
Climate:
Temperatures typically range from the low 70’s to the mid 90’s. Isolated afternoon thunder-showers are a possibility year-round. Wind can be factor while fishing and the sun is very strong.
Medical Facilities:
Campeche is a city of 300,000 and has medical facilities that are adequate for treating minor injuries; however, when traveling in Mexico we recommend carrying medical evacuation coverage in the event of severe injury. We recommend Global Rescue.
Power and Communications:
Power is standard 110 so you will not need converters for your electrical equipment. Most Cell phones work in Mexico (check with your provider) and otherwise there are phones in the hotel rooms.
Water:
Please DO NOT drink the water. While Campeche is a modern city drinking the tap water is not recommended.
Clothing:
As with most Central American destinations, dress in Campeche is casual. Guests should have quick dry pants and shorts, long sleeved quick dry shirts, casual cotton pants, shorts and shirts, sandals, boat shoes or tennis shoes, hat with wide brim, sun gloves, light sweater, light rain coat, swim suits.
Laundry:
Laundry service is not available. Please pack accordingly.
Beverages/Alcohol:
Alcoholic beverages are not included in your package. Beer, wine and spirits are available in Campeche.
Tackle/Equipment List:
Rods: 9ft / 8wt and 9wt fast action rods.
Lines: Floating saltwater tapers in the appropriate weights and saltwater floating lines with clear tips.
Reels: Any quality anodized, corrosion resistant, saltwater reel will work. Get the best reel you can afford such as Ables, Bauers, and the likes. reels should have at least 200 yards of 30 pound backing.
Leaders: If you are buying pre-made leaders they should have at least 20-pound class with shock tippets from 30-40 lb test. You should also bring spools of 20lb, 25lb, 30lb, and 40lb tippet to construct your own leaders on site.
Flies: All patterns should be in #1/0 and #2/0 and no more that 2 ½ inches long. Black death, Purple death, cockroaches, White sea bunnies, deceivers, and gurglers all work. Colors used most often will be Black, Purple, White, and Yellow
Note: If you are tying your own flies we recommend adding crystal flash to many of your patterns.
Waders & Boots: While fishing many choose to go barefoot or wear only socks, which offer protection from the sun. Quick dry shorts and especially quick dry pants are the everyday attire.
Miscellaneous: Polarized glasses, nippers, reel covers, reel lubricant, hemostats, pliers, tape measure, tape for blisters and stripping finger, fanny pack, Aloe gel for sunburn, SPF 25 or higher waterproof sunscreen, insect repellent, sun gloves, wide brimmed hat, and a small waterproof bag.
