McCloud River Trip Details
Included / Not Included:
Included: Lunch, flies, and guided fishing.
Not Included: Accommodations and meals, Current California Fishing licenses, terminal tackle (including waders/boots), and gratuities.
Travel Logistics:
Arrival Information: To get to the McCloud River you need to make flight arrangements to Redding, CA and rent a car. The McCloud River is approximately 70 miles from Redding.
Getting to the Lodge: Many anglers overnight in the charming towns of Dunsmuir or Mt Shasta. Both are only minutes from the water while still having the creature comforts of nice accommodations and restaurants.
Departure Information: On your departure day you will leave McCloud according to your travel plans (see itinerary for details).
Travel Cash:
As a guideline we recommend that each guest travels with enough cash for staff & guide gratuities.
Gratuities:
We recommend guide gratuities of $50-$75 per day if you are happy with your guide and these may be given to your guide at the end of each day.
Fishing Licenses:
Fishing licenses are not included. Please be prepared to pay for these on-site with cash or credit card. See itinerary for details.
Climate:
Temperatures typically range from the mid 50’s to the mid 90’s. In the summer it is usually quite warm during the day and cooler in the evening. However, it is important for guests to be prepared for cold rainy conditions throughout the season.
Medical Facilities:
The closest medical facility is in Mt. Shasta, approximately 30 minutes from the river. Guests have the responsibility to disclose any special medical, physical, or dietary needs to the lodge ahead of time.
Power and Communications:
Cell reception is widely available in the Mt. Shasta area. WiFi service will vary depending on chosen accommodations.
Clothing:
In the Pacific Northwest it is always possible to encounter a wide variety of weather conditions. We recommend that you always come well prepared with different layers including lightweight long sleeve and short-sleeved shirts, fleece top and bottoms, synthetic long underwear, rain jacket, sun and rain hats and fishing gloves. Protect yourself from the sun!
Laundry:
Laundry service will vary according to chosen accommodations.
Beverages/Alcohol:
Alcoholic beverages are available in Mt. Shasta or McCloud.
Tackle/Equipment List:
Rods: 9 ft. 4-6 wts.
Reels: Single action reels with at least 50 yards of backing and a good weight forward floating line.
Leaders: 9-10ft. 4X-5X tapered leaders with tippet to match. Flourocarbon tippet is recommended at the fly.
Flies: The most effective flies include the Dark Lord #14-16, Fox’s pupa, Morrish Dirty Bird, Morrish's Iron sally, and copper johns. Also small mayfly nymphs (pheasant tails, micro mayflies, and princes) in the #16-18 range are also effective patterns. Be sure and bring a few October caddis nymphs, Golden Stones, Salmonflies, and Red Fox Squirrel nymphs in #10-12. Small black midge pupa size #18 work great too.
Misc: BB split shot, indicators, floatant, polarized glasses etc.
Waders/Boots: Breathable waders are the way to go. You can layer accordingly depending upon the weather. Studded felt boots work great but felt only boots are fine too.
Wading Staff: Highly recommended.
Rental Rods/reels: Your guide is happy to supply you with the proper rod and reel outfit for your day for a $25 fee per day. Please let us know prior to your trip to make these arrangements.
