Travel Logistics:
Arrival Information: Depending upon your trip and river you will be fishing you will need to fly into Bozeman or Missoula, Montana. Please check your itinerary to determine which airport.
Getting to the Lodge: Tom Jenni and his guides will pick you up at your hotel the first day of your trip. This will be a full day of floating and fishing.
Departure Information: On the last day of your trip your guides will transfer you back to your hotel at the end of the day (see itinerary for details).
Travel Cash:
As a guideline we recommend that each guest travels with approximately $400 - $600 for guide gratuities, licenses, etc.
Gratuities:
We recommend a gratuity of 10% to 15% of the package price to be given to your head guide on the last day of the trip.
Fishing Licenses:
We recommend that you purchase your fishing licenses prior to the trip. Please refer to the following website for updated fees for fishing licenses:
http://fwp.mt.gov/fishing/license/default.html
Climate:
Montana has a highly variable climate; always expect the best but be prepared for the worst. Bring clothes to be comfortable from 30-90 degrees F and enough clothes that if you wear everything you can survive a snowstorm (unlikely event, but this is Montana).
Medical Facilities:
The closest medical facility is in Bozeman or Missoula (depending on trip taken). Guests have the responsibility to disclose any special medical, physical, or dietary needs to the outfitter ahead of time.
Power and Communications:
There will be no electricity on your float trip. Cell service is not available.
Clothing:
As the climate is extremely changeable and a wide range of temperatures and conditions can be expected, we recommend layering clothes. Anglers should be prepared with thermal underwear, fleece/soft shell jacket, and a rain jacket. Synthetic fabrics are preferred to cotton.
In addition to ‘camp’ clothes, we suggest you bring a warm hat, light gloves, fleece jacket, and comfortable pair of camp shoes. A small flashlight with fresh batteries is also helpful for late night visits to the bush. We also recommend a camp towel or other small towel if you will be taking a refreshing dip in the river or to clean up after you shower.
Laundry:
Laundry service will not be available on the float trip. Please pack accordingly.
Beverages/Alcohol:
Beer, wine and spirits are provided on the trip. If you have something specific let Tom Jenni know and he’ll have it stocked for your trip.
Tackle/Equipment List:
Rods/Reels: Anywhere from 4 to 7 weights with 5 and 6 being most common and typical. It is nice to have a rod per person for dries and nymphs. If someone really enjoys throwing streamers a sink tip on one of the bigger rods is a pretty good idea but in general the guides don't push people to fish streamers unless they want to.
Lines: Floating lines primarily but carrying a sink tip for streamers are fun too. Type 3 -6 tips work great.
Leaders: 9 foot leaders with tippets of 3x to 5x but if throwing streamers maybe 1 or 2x as well.
Flies:** Flies are supplied by the guides but if you like to tie or get stocked ahead of time you may want to bring the following:
Dries: hoppers - primarily in tan from size 10s to 4s with rubber legs, other terrestrials ants, beetles, possibility of a few tricos so duns and spinners for tricos, if the weather is really cruddy we could get some fall baetis as well.
Nymphs for the Yellowstone are pretty basic and not too fancy, if the fish have entered the "pack on weight for fall" mode then big #10 prince nymphs are awesome, trico, baetis patterns as well.
Streamers: big and olive, from buggers to big rabbit strip streamers (we always prefer bigger, wool-head rabbit strip or double-bunnies but need to be able to throw them).
