Included / Not Included –
Included: Guiding, lunches, spey tackle (when requested), and a few very well tied flies.
Not Included: Transportation to/from Tillamook, accommodations and meals in Tillamook, gratuities and fishing licenses.
Travel Logistics:
Arrival Information: To get to the Oregon coast you need to make flight arrangements to Portland, Oregon and rent a car.
Getting to the Lodge: The guides will pick you up at the Shilo Inn Tillamook or the Inn at Manzanita.
Departure Information: On your departure day you will drive back to Portland according to your travel plans (see itinerary for details).
Travel Cash:
As a guideline we recommend that each guest travels with enough cash for gratuities.
Gratuities:
A gratuity of $50-100 a day (for the boat) is a good guideline if you have enjoyed your time with Mike and Scott.
Fishing Licenses:
Anglers must purchase licenses ahead of time. Licenses can be purchased at www.dfw.state.or.us/online_license_sales/index.asp.
Climate:
Expect wet, rainy cold conditions when visiting the region. Boot foot waders can be great and bring the best raincoat you can afford. Weather can be nice and well into the 60’s but do not arrive expecting it!
Medical Facilities:
The closest medical facility is in Tillamook, approximately 10 minutes from the hotel. Guests have the responsibility to disclose any special medical, physical, or dietary needs to the lodge ahead of time.
Power and Communications:
Cell phones generally work anywhere on the coast.
Clothing:
As the climate is extremely changeable and a wide range of temperatures and conditions can be expected, we recommend layering clothes. Anglers should be prepared with thermal underwear, fleece/soft shell jacket, and a rain jacket. Synthetic fabrics are preferred to cotton.
Dress warmly and always bring along quality raingear.
Laundry:
Laundry is available upon request to guests during their stay. Please be prepared to pay for this service onsite.
Tackle/Equipment List:
A good raincoat
Neoprene or breathable waders (this is a good trip for bootfoots)
Several synthetic layers for upper and lower body, more are better than less
Warm hat
Fingerless gloves
Polarized glasses
7-9 wt. Single hand rods in 9’6” to 10 foot lengths
7-10wt. Double hand Spey rods in 12-15 foot lengths.
A good reel with at least 100 yards of 30 lb backing
Floating line and 12-15 ft. sink tips in type 4-8, Teeny 200-300 grain heads.
Note: The guides have extra rods and reels and they will supply all the flies and leaders
If you want to bring your own flies, know that the guides like large flies from size 2-2/0. Some effective store bought patters include Morrish Trailer Trash, Ward’s Intruder, large tube flies, Popsicles, Bjorn’s Super Prawn, General Practitioner, articulated leeches, egg sucking leeches, and assorted large marabou spey patterns.
Leader material should be Maxima ultra-green in 10,12, and 15 pound test. No tapered leaders are needed.
