Upper Rogue Travel Recommendations

Travel Cash:

As a guideline we recommend that each guest travels with enough cash for guide gratuities.

Gratuities:
We recommend a gratuity of $60-80 per day for your fishing guide. Please give this directly to your guide at the end of each day of fishing.

Fishing Licenses:
You will need to have a current Oregon fishing license and steelhead tag to fish the Rogue River. You may purchase a license at the following locations:

• Ashland Fly Shop, 399 East Main Street Ashland, OR 97520; 541.488.6454
• Fred Meyer, Medford off of Highway 62 and I-5
• Online: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/online_license_sales/index.asp

Climate:
Temperatures typically range from the mid 50’s to the mid 90’s. In the summer it is usually quite warm during the day and cool in the evening. However, it is important for guests to be prepared for cold rainy conditions throughout the season.

Medical Facilities:
The closest medical facility is in Medford, approximately 15 minutes from the river.

Power and Communications:
Although internet access will vary according to your chosen accommodations, cellular service is good throughout southern Oregon.

Clothing:
As the climate is extremely changeable and a wide range of temperatures and conditions can be expected, we recommend layering clothes. Anglers should be prepared with thermal underwear, fleece/soft shell jacket, and a rain jacket. Synthetic fabrics are preferred to cotton.

Laundry:
Laundry service is dependent upon lodging options, see itinerary for details.

Tackle/Equipment List:
Current Oregon fishing license with steelhead tag.
Rod: 9-10 ft. rods in line weights 6-7.
Line: Floating lines.
Leader / Tippet: 2X and 3X tippet material.
Flies: Assorted weighted nymphs. Note: split shot and other forms of attached weight is not allowed during this time of year so we often fish a two-fly set up with a heavy large nymph taking down a smaller one. As for the larger nymphs consider the following: Morrish Dirty Bird in natural and rust size 6, assorted golden stones in size 4-8, assorted dark stones and egg sucking stones in 4-8, Morrish deep October caddis pupa size 6-8, Morrish thunder eggs size 6, prince in size 6. For smaller trailing patterns consider the following in sizes 12-16: Copper Johns in copper and red, Bloody Mary, Morrish Anato-May, flash back PT’s, Bird’s nest, and assorted glo-bugs in size 8-10.
Strike indicators and floatant.
For anglers interested in swinging flies bring 6-8 wt. spey rods with interchangeable sink tips and 10-12 lb maxima tippet. Large Marabou and Spey patterns, Morrish Medusas, intruders, and leeches are effective in sizes 1-4 as well as smaller traditional patterns in sizes 4-8.
Waders & Boots: Chest high breathable and or neoprene waders with studded soles (required). Wading belts are also strongly recommended.
Miscellaneous: Dress in layers and bring a warm waterproof jacket and gloves. Polaroid fishing glasses, needle nose pliers or hemostats for releasing fish, nippers, camera and lots of film, insect repellent, sunscreen, a waterproof bag for your day gear, hat, bandana, split shot, and tape measure.
