Climate:
Temperatures typically range from the mid 50’s to the mid 90’s. In the summer it is usually quite warm during the day and cool in the evening. However, it is important for guests to be prepared for cold rainy conditions throughout the season.
Medical Facilities:
The closest medical facility is in Klamath Falls, approximately 30 minutes from the river. Guests have the responsibility to disclose any special medical, physical, or dietary needs to the lodge ahead of time.
Power and Communications:
There are no phones in the Roe Cabin. The Running Y has phones and WiFi. Please check with your cell phone provider to determine coverage in this area.
Clothing:
As the climate is extremely changeable and a wide range of temperatures and conditions can be expected, we recommend layering clothes. Anglers should be prepared with thermal underwear, fleece/soft shell jacket, and a rain jacket. Synthetic fabrics are preferred to cotton.
Laundry:
Laundry service is not available. Please pack accordingly.
Beverages/Alcohol:
The lodge does not provide any beverages. Guests may bring in their own.
Tackle/Equipment List:
Rods/Reels: 4wt to 6wt with a length of 9' to 10'. The heavier the weight rod, the longer it should be to protect the light tippet sizes required for the rivers in the later months of the season. I always set up at least 2 rods. One with a floating and one with a sinking line. This insures that you'll be ready for anything. Trout reels require nothing more than enough smooth drag to keep the spool from overrunning itself on a big run and enough capacity for the line weight being used. You should have enough room for the line and 100 yards of backing for that unexpected 10 pounder.
Lines: Floating line and a Clear Intermediate Sinking line. Floating lines for the dry fly hatches and nymphing and the sinking lines to fish subsurface with nymphs and streamers. Most of the largest fish caught in the area taken on the Intermediate sinking lines. I prefer the Cortland camo intermediate lines with a long butt section of 25lb fluorocarbon and a long fluorocarbon leader of 4-6x. P.S. Tie good knots!
Leaders: Floating lines/ Monofilament leaders-12'/5x or 6x. Except for hex fishing-9'/4x. Intermediate lines/ Fluorocarbon leaders-12'/4x-5x. Type 4 sinking lines/ Fluorocarbon leaders-9'/3x-4x. Best for the Wood River. Please note that fluorocarbon doesn't decay like monofilament does. Please, please, please take your tippet home and don't litter the river. It will be there forever!
Flies:
Dries: Bring all your spring creek Mays, caddis and midges as well as some of the following: assorted caddis #14-18, PMD #16-18, BWO #16-18, Griffith gnats #18-22, Midge pupa, 16-22, assorted mayfly cripples and spinners in 14-18, adult Hexaginias (yes, even in September), assorted terrestrials including hoppers beetles and ants.
Nymphs: PT nymphs #14-18, #16-20 Morrish anato-mays in olive and amber, Bead head bird’s nest #14-18, Prince #12-16, olive and black mini leaches #8-10, black, olive, and burgundy, Woolley buggers #6-10, calabatis nymphs #14, sparkle pupa in tan and green #14-18.
Waders & Boots: Breathable waders are the most popular with varying thicknesses of synthetics layers for different conditions. You are primarily fishing out on the boat on the Williamson but do get out to wade in a few places so be prepared.
Note: We recommend that your contact Roe Outfitters directly to purchase the appropriate flies for your trip. You can call them ahead of time and they will have them ready when you arrive, or you can purchase them the first morning of your trip.
