For years we have waited and watched, hoping for the creation of the ultimate inshore Baja fly fishing venue. We wanted first class accommodations, guides skilled in understanding the needs of fly fishers, quality non-angling activities, and a pristine, protected white sand beach in front of it all. Last year veteran guide and founder of Beulah Rods, James Shaughnessy, answered our call. Located 45 minutes southeast of La Paz, Mexico, Bahia de los Sueños is centrally located amidst Baja’s most prolific saltwater fly fishing waters. Here fly anglers enjoy world-class fly fishing for roosterfish, dorado, billfish, tuna and wahoo under the guidance of James and his crew of skilled pangueros.

Accommodations are in lavish beachfront villas that feature master suites with private baths and Jacuzzi tubs. The villas also feature covered patios, pool, weight room and tennis court. Evening fly fishing on the white sand beach in front, snorkeling, kayaking as well as golf are all close by.

Bahia de los Suenos is located just south of La Paz, Mexico on the southern tip of Baja California.

Fishing Program:
Forty five minutes southeast of La Paz is one of the most productive blue water fly fishing areas in the world. Gentle seas, fair weather and a precipitous drop of the ocean floor make this the perfect setting for fly fishing. Add the incredible number of migrating pelagic and resident species and you have a recipe for great saltwater fly fishing.

The fishing day begins and ends on the beach in front of the property. Captains pick up guests on the beach in front of the lodge for the days’ fly fishing typically around 6:30 or 7 AM each morning. Live sardines are obtained and used as chum to attract fast moving species near to the boat and hold them in the area. Flies are then presented. The action can be fast and furious. A strong double haul with quick delivery will increase your odds, and distance is also an advantage with shy fish.

Fly fishing can be excellent year round but the best action and conditions for fly fishing comes in May, June and July. Fair but hot weather settles into the area and an abundance of bait attracts migrating species like roosterfish, jacks, dorado, billfish, tuna and wahoo. During the summer months all these species and more can be anticipated, but if you have a specific quarry there are certain weeks when your chances are better. Dorado and Roosterfish tend to be the predominant target species for fly fisherman, and although both species are in the area during late spring and summer, sometimes are better than others. During May and the beginning of June, large roosterfish migrate into the area and will aggressively take a well placed fly. Roosterfish possess exceptional eyesight and incredible acceleration making them a challenge to hook and land. As the season progresses, the larger roosterfish move off to deeper cooler water and become more cautious. Ten to fifteen pound roosterfish continue to be abundant throughout the summer months.

As the summer progresses and hot weather sets in, Dorado (mahi-mahi) appear in greater numbers. Any floating structure has the potential to hold fish. Commercial sharking buoys set by local Pangueros are frequented by fisherman and a handful of live sardines can get the party started. A fierce take and acrobatic displays make this one of fly fishing’s top sport fish.

Though Dorado and roosterfish get a lot of press, there are numerous other exciting species to target. Marlin, sailfish, tuna, skipjack, bonito, jack crevalle and pargo are a few that can be expected to be seen and should be anticipated with appropriate gear.

Another species that has been showing up in the last 3 years are milkfish. Massive fish in schools of 50-200 fish who we find feeding lazily on the surface. They are finicky but can offer some solid potential.

Surf fishing from the beaches also has some excellent opportunities. Jacks, roosters, sierra, ladyfish and pompano cruise the shore looking to corral bait fish into the sandy shallows. Sight casting, teasing fish in with spin gear or just blind casting in a probable spot will get the job done. A shore blitz is not an unlikely site.

Each boat has one Captain (guide) per boat that is friendly and well experienced with fly fishing. Their English is limited but they are able to communicate. They actually know quite a bit of English but are extremely shy. Your fishing host will also rotate between boats during your trip to offer more detailed fishing instruction.

Non-Angling Activities:
Golf, snorkeling, kayaking, SCUBA diving, wake – boarding, sailing, water skiing, wind surfing

Accommodations and Meals:
Guests are housed in two custom built homes in an ideal setting on the Bay of Dreams (Bahia de los Suenos). Rooms are all master suites each with their own private bath. Your home includes a Jacuzzi, pool, access to private white sand beach with adjacent reef for snorkeling or fishing. Kayaks and snorkeling gear are also available. Weight room and tennis court are included on property as well as par 3 golf hole. The new 18 hole golf course is located behind the property. Spa treatment is available on request. Guests may also fish on the beach in front of the property, which often holds roosterfish and a variety of inshore species. There is a reef out in front of the lodge with great snorkeling as well.

A full breakfast will be served early in the morning at the lodge. A boxed lunch will be prepared for your day of fishing. Please be sure to share with us your dietary restrictions and allergies prior to your trip so the cooks can accommodate your needs. After fishing you will be served appetizers and a wonderful dinner including local fish dishes.

Day 1: Depart home and arrive La Paz airport and onto resort
Day 2-5: Four full days of fishing
Day 6: Depart resort for home
