Bulkley River Lodge
Look up “steelhead lodge” in a dictionary and you might see a picture of this place. It is perfect, quiet, and private with quaint cabins on the banks of a lovely riffle. For those unfamiliar with the Bulkley, this river’s bounty is unsurpassed – large returns of wild summer steelhead, an endless number of classic runs, and some of the finest dry fly and greased line fly fishing in the world.
Headed by Bulkley River veteran Dave Evans, the guide staff at Bulkley River Lodge is made up of experienced professionals that maintain a fun, playful, and educational attitude on the river. Accessing more than 80 miles of gorgeous fly water via jet boats, drift boats and rafts, Bulkley River Lodge provides an exceptional steelhead fly fishing experience for seasoned steelheaders and first timers alike. Anglers sleep two per cabin, each complete with comfortable beds, private baths, heat, and 24-hour electricity. The lodge has a small tackle shop and a complimentary bar. Excellent meals with tastefully selected wines are served in the main lodge each evening.
The Bulkley River Lodge is located on the banks of the Bulkley, roughly 40km upstream of Smithers, BC.
The Bulkley River is a Skeena River tributary and is considered one of the best steelhead fly fishing rivers in the world. From late August through mid-October, the Bulkley is as good a dry fly and greased line fly fishery as exists. As the season progresses and water temperatures drop, anglers spend more time fishing light type III and VI sink tips. The steelhead fishing can remain excellent through the second week in November and later if water conditions permit. Bulkley river steelhead are known for their willingness to move to a fly and range from 4 to 25+ pounds, with the average steelhead typically weighing in around 10 pounds. Jet boats, drift boats and rafts are employed to access water, but all fly fishing is done while wading. All Bulkley river steelhead are wild and must be released unharmed as quickly as possible.
During a week stay, anglers will at times depart from the lodge by jet boat and at other times they will drive to more distant locations before putting in. Bulkley River Lodge guides are experienced, personable professionals. The vast majority of Bulkley river anglers use spey rods.
Accommodations and Meals:
Bulkley River Lodge is a custom log resort consisting of a main lodge with a dining room, a living room with a rock fireplace, fly tying bench, and a complimentary bar. The lodge has four newly remodeled guest cabins located fifty yards from the river. Guests sleep two to a cabin and share a bathroom and shower. The cabins are heated and have 24-hour electricity. In the morning and evenings the guests gather in the main lodge for gourmet meals and cocktails.
Guides join guests at the dinner table where head guide and manager Dave Evans (Whitey), presides over the daily “prick of the day” award.
Day 1 : Arrive Smithers and overnight.
Day 2 : Transfer from Smithers to the lodge in the morning. Fish full day.
Days 3-8: Six full days guided fishing.
Day 9 : In the morning, transfer to Smithers Airport for flight home.
