Northern Rivers

Argentina

The Northern Rivers approach is simple. Provide guests with impeccable accommodations in a remote unspoiled rural setting surrounded by a myriad of productive dry fly trout fishing options, highly experienced local guides and exclusive access to several private streams and spring creeks.

Designed and managed by Untamed Angling, the team that started La Zona, Far End Rivers, and the acclaimed Tsimane operation in Bolivia, we have every reason to believe that the Northern Rivers too will become a coveted classic.

The Alumine region of northern Patagonia has been compared with southern Colorado and northern New Mexico and hosts a remarkable diversity of seldom seen trout rich waters. The Northern Rivers fishing program takes special pride in targeting remote reaches of public water as well as a host of smaller private systems. Here the end game is sight fishing to large selective trout with dry flies. With abundant hatches, crystal clear spring creeks, willow lined freestones as well as larger rivers that can accommodate day trips and overnight float trips, this region has it all. Under the skilled supervision of experienced local guides the crew at Northern Rivers can customize the week to suit your individual fishing preferences. The fishing is complimented by single occupancy accommodations at the magnificent Estancia Piedra Pintada, a spectacular boutique hotel situated on the shores of Pulmari Lake.

Location:
Northern Rivers lodging is located on the shore of the serene Pulmari Lake, some 30 minutes west of the town of Alumine.

Fishing Program:
Typical daily schedule:

A hearty breakfast is usually served at 7:00 a.m. at the lodge. After breakfast, you will be met by your guide and depart to the chosen fishing destination of the day. You will fish until 2-3 p.m., at which time you will enjoy a gourmet streamside lunch of the finest Argentine meats, cheeses, olives, fruits and vegetables and, of course, wines. After lunch, it is common in Argentina to take a siesta. The Patagonian days are long (the sun sets very late), so there is plenty of time to relax in the middle of the day. You will return to fish until approximately 9:00 p.m., at which time you will be transferred back to the lodge for a shower, cocktails and dinner. Dinner is served late in Argentina, typically around 10:30 p.m. Sleep well and rest up for another day!

The fishing primarily uses the same techniques as in the American West, with comparable fly patterns and presentations that most North American anglers are accustomed to. Especially prevalent in this northern region of Patagonia is the abundance of aquatic insects such as mayflies, caddis and stoneflies, allowing for great hatch fishing at times.

Fishing is done depending on your preference but mostly by wading. As we have plenty of water to cover, either wading or float fishing is done from customized Mackenzie drift boats. The fishing is custom tailored to suit each angler’s desires, skills and interests.

Fisheries:
The Northern Rivers operation has its base among the many small secret streams near to the Pulmari Lake. Many of these streams are within private estancias and are entirely exclusive to the Northern Rivers fishing program. Also, the nearby Rio Aluminé has over 90 miles of productive water. There are 2 significant tributaries and several small spring creeks as well as 2-3 lakes from which to choose. With the great number of options available the lodge is able to custom-tailor the fishing program to angler preferences.

Guides are all English speaking, locals and are among the very best in the region. They are highly skilled oarsman and fly fishermen and can assist anglers of any skill level.

Non-Angling Activities:
Trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding are all available on well marked trails within the estancia. Bird watching and wildlife viewing (Red Stag) are also options. Spa, massages and beauty treatments are also available at an extra cost.

Accommodations and Meals:
Accommodations at Northern Rivers will rate among the finest fishing lodges in the world. Located on the shore of the Pulmari Lake, the lodge boasts 12 well appointed single suites (shared upon request). Northern Rivers Lodge is a place where rustic luxury meets exemplary service and first class cuisine, surrounded by the serene Northern Patagonian landscape.

The Lodge’s dining area is cozy and comfortable with a spectacular view overlooking Pulmari Lake. All guest rooms are spacious single suites (or shared upon request).
