Fishing Program:
Reel Wilderness Adventures offers a world-class wilderness fly fishing adventure for five species of fish: rainbow trout, arctic char, arctic grayling, northern pike, and sockeye salmon. They provide jet boats to run you around the lake system along with experienced Coast Guard certified guides.

While Reel Wilderness Adventures prides itself on a flexible fishing program, their schedule often entails a “split day” with a hearty morning session, followed by lunch and down time. Virtually every evening, anglers head out to the Agulupak just as the “fly out” lodges are heading home. Typically three morning sessions will be spent fishing the “pak” and three morning sessions will be spent exploring the region’s other fisheries.

Their season starts off in late June. June action is highlighted by the out migration of salmon smolt. Smolt are two year old salmon that are migrating to the sea. Big hungry arctic char literally line up by the hundreds at the outlets of the rivers and lakes waiting for the smolt to arrive. The fishing can be very fast and furious. Large hungry arctic char chasing schools of salmon smolt is a sight to see. This is some wild action that lasts into the first part of July. Fishing for big rainbows is also very good at this time of the season with streamers, leeches and nymphs. If the weather is warm, this time period can also offer good dry fly fishing. and depending on the temperature of the water, dry flies.

Late June also sees the start of the salmon run. The sockeye salmon start arriving by the hundreds of thousands and can be caught from late June through the rest of the season. Sockeye are a terrific game fish that weigh from 6 to 12+ pounds and are very strong fighters. In addition to great salmon fishing and exceptional dry fly fishing for big rainbow trout, side trips for grayling, char and pike are also part of the action throughout the summer.

July sees the start of some of the best dry fly action in the state of Alaska. If you are interested in catching large rainbows on a dry fly, then this is the place. Peak dry fly action starts the last week of June and runs the entire month of July and through the first several weeks of August. Targeting these large rainbows with dry flies is the camp’s specialty.

Mid-August sees the start of the salmon spawn. Aggressive sockeye salmon spawn by the hundreds of thousands in the Agulupak. During this time rainbows and char literally gorge on their eggs. The largest and fattest fish of the season will be caught from mid-August through September. Fat rainbows and big hungry arctic char are caught on egg patterns and beads from mid-August through September. As September progresses flesh and streamer fishing takes over and provides some of the largest fish of the year. The fly fishing is great all summer; it just changes over the course of the season.
