Spring in the South Island of New Zealand has arrived and the fishing season is open !

Early season fishing in these parts has some positive and negative aspects. On the plus side, the fish haven’t been fished to for 5 months. On the down side, the rivers can be running high and the weather can be changeable.   So far this season the weather has been, for the most part, cooperative. In typical early season fashion, we have had our fair share of overcast and rainy days, but the fishing has been sensational with many 8lb+ fish caught already !  The fish caught thus far have all been in very good good-excellent condition, with anglers catching as many as 12 browns in one day.

Our forward bookings are well ahead of last season, with lots of Australians visiting us early season, providing us with our busiest October and November ever.
Our high season is also busy with lots of folks from the USA and UK booked in already. However, we still have reasonable-good availability for most of January and February.

I am very pleased to announce that Ryan Hewitt has joined the Owen River Lodge team as our new Head Chef.  Ryan is originally from Auckland, and has worked as a chef both in the USA and England, before coming back to New Zealand in July 2005. Since then, he has cooked at several of Nelson’s leading restaurants. Ryan and his family have moved into the Owen Valley and live a few kilometers upstream from the lodge.  Ryan is an outstanding chef, producing world class gourmet food that our guests are raving about !

Over Winter I have been busy with several maintenance and building projects in and around the lodge. We have replaced the carpet in the main lodge, built a feature schist stone wall near the dining room and built a wooden deck right beside the river.

The team and I look forward to spoiling your clients and helping them catch their fish of a lifetime!
