2013 Yucatan Tarpon Tour
May 27 – June 4, 2013 / Hosted by Dylan Rose
After an epic trip first trip to Tarpon Cay Lodge and Isla del Sabalo last May, I cannot wait to get back! Please join me next spring as I visit both lodges again to experience more of the best juvenile tarpon fishing in the world.
The fertile waters of the northern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico hold some of the most prolific populations of baby and juvenile tarpon found anywhere. The angling action can be constant, fierce and incredibly reliable. Five spaces are available for adventurous anglers that are in need of a tarpon fix. We will begin the adventure at Tarpon Cay Lodge in the small fishing village of San Felipe and then transfer mid-way through the trip to Isla Del Sabalo.
These are two fisheries that complement each other extremely well and both feature some of the most outstanding juvenile tarpon fishing in the world. By splitting time at two lodges you can really hedge your bets to find some remarkable action. Tarpon Cay features short runs, shallow water, and a prolific and eager population of tarpon from 5 – 15lbs. The charming town of San Felipe is everything a “real” Mexican fishing village should be – free of the trappings of American tourism and all that comes with it.
Isla del Sabalo offers an extremely remote location, rustic accommodations, and equally amazing opportunities for tarpon but with notable differences in the style of fishing. While some fishing close to the mangroves and near river mouths is done, the bulk of the bigger fish inhabit several 8 – 10 foot deep turtle grass flats found 2 – 3 miles from shore. The fish run in sizes from 15 – 50lbs and are incredibly spirited fighters. Longer casts, more advanced techniques and longer runs in the panga are typical.
This trip is the ultimate Yucatan tarpon tour. The option to fish two lodges with two distinctly different fisheries is one that I am very excited about. The operations, the staff, guides, lodging and brilliant home cooked Mexican food are all fabulous. Please contact us to find out more information on this exciting trip!
