2013 Tarpon University hosted by Marco Ruz
Opportunities abound for anglers traveling and fishing throughout the Caribbean for tarpon. Tarpon can often become an afterthought for many saltwater anglers. After all, with so many options for bonefish, permit, barracuda and jacks, it’s easy to understand how they could become overlooked. Often it seems that many anglers choose not to actively focus on tarpon due to their limited experience. Tackle, fly patterns, leader systems and presentations are uniquely different when it comes to these prehistoric fish.
Marco Ruz comes tight to an eager juvenile tarpon at Tarpon Cay Lodge
The goal of Tarpon University, with special host Marco Ruz, is to give you the confidence, knowledge and skills to successfully target tarpon anywhere you may find them. Each night of the trip, Marco will rally the crew for tying lessons and demonstrations, rigging, knot-tying, tarpon theory and hook setting strategy. His experience targeting these remarkable fish with flies is extensive and his operations on the northern portion of the Yucatan offer the most interesting and well rounded juvenile tarpon fisheries found anywhere in the world.
Marco Ruz hoists a beauty at Isla Del Sabalo
One of the amazing aspects of tarpon is that they have the ability to thrive in a variety of water types and eco-systems. From oxygen depleted backwater lagoons to open flats and brackish lakes, from deep within tangled mangrove forests to the depths of inner island channels. Tarpon can inhabit a multitude of different water types found throughout the saltwater world and each scenario can require unique techniques and strategy. This trip will give the confidence to target tarpon anywhere they may swim.
