For lovers of large rainbow trout and tight line takes, Igiugig Lodge offers some of the most exciting early season action in all of Alaska. Fantastic returns of sockeyes over the past several seasons have resulted in great fishing here. Imagine every sockeye in the Lake Iliamna region has to pass by here, both adults coming and juveniles going. For several weeks after the opening day on June 8, the annual smolt migration is in full swing. The rainbow trout lay waiting, intercepting the small salmon as they attempt to head to sea. The rainbows here are unique. They are large, mostly chrome bright and aggressively chase these young salmon. Right out the front door of this cozy lodge is the beginning of the mighty Kvichak River, the best piece of water to target these fish with a swung fly. If you love casting two handed rods, this is a home run as it offers steelhead like fishing with many opportunities to come connected. The most important factor for success in the early season is location and Igiugig Lodge has it. Along with their prime piece of real estate, the staff here offers an incredible level of personalized service and years of experience. Add a couple fly out days to various venues that may include the Nushagak for kings and chums or Katmai Park rivers like the Little Ku or Moraine Creek and Igiugig Lodge offers hard core anglers some of Alaska’s best.
