For many trout anglers, fishing dry flies to rising fish is the essence of our sport. We frequently receive requests from clients looking for the best dry fly fishing opportunities in the Rockies each month of the season. And while it is true that the presence of surface feeding fish cannot be predicted, there are some times of year that opportunities are more reliable than others. What follows are some of our favorite dry fly fishing opportunities in the Rockies. Click the links to see our full write-up on that destination.

April/May – Pre-runoff, variable weather and intermittent hatches characterize this time of year. Hatches may include midges, March Brown mayflies, Skwala stoneflies or micro caddis. This is a great time of year for destinations that have stillwaters.
Crane Meadow Lodge
High Lonesome Ranch

June – Stoneflies! This is the main event for many western rivers. Giant stones, golden stones and little yellow stones usually make their first appearances of the year this month. Also a good month to experience a Green Drake hatch.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison River
Henry’s Fork Lodge
Brush Creek Ranch

North Fork Crossing Lodge
Smith River Float Trips

July – Weather depending, this is the month that we’re looking for regular hatches of Pale Morning Dun mayflies, Pale Evening Duns and caddis.
Firehole Ranch
South Fork Lodge
El Rancho Pinoso
Linehan Outfitting Co.

Tsylos Park Lodge
Montana’s Overnight Float Trips

August – Hopper time! Although a handful of Morrish Hoppers will suffice this month, be sure to have a few beetles and ants in your fly box as well.
Harrison Homestead
Ruby Springs Lodge
Middle Fork of the Salmon
4UR Ranch
Elk River Guiding Company
Spatsizi Wilderness Lodge

September – Grasshoppers will likely hold out for the first part of the month. Tricos are the main event this month and the trout know it! If the weather gets cold and drizzly keep an eye out for Blue-Winged Olive mayflies.
