Back in December of 2010, I lead a small group of friends and exceptional anglers to Nonouti Island in the Republic of Kiribati. At the time, the government was trying to open the island up as a flats destination and the trip was designed to help them understand what it will take to open the island to traveling anglers from the US. The trip had many highlights including getting to see the culture on this remote and seldom visited Kiribati Island, being the first US anglers to walk the island’s beautiful flats, and catching decent numbers of much larger than expected bonefish, as well as seeing and catching bluefin and a giant trevally. Needless to say, we were also met with all of the challenges of unexplored flats on a remote island with limited services. When we left the island we determined it was not ready for prime time but it did have some very promising features. We also all left the island with the sense of being true explorers and I am sure our lives have been richer for the experience. Unfortunately, after that trip the project was put on hold and since that time not much has happened on the island.
The original leader of the project, Australian based guide Gavin Platz, will be working to get the project back on its feet by bringing a few groups to continue the exploration. Interested parties should know that this is very lightly guided trip to an island with limited resources. Guests will be there to experience this remote atoll’s culture and help Gavin continue to educate the locals on the extraordinary flats that surround them.
