Blue Horizon, Belize
In 1997, iconic Belizean fly fishing guide Lincoln Westby started Blue Horizon Lodge on Northeast Caye. For decades Blue Horizon Lodge was the destination for hardcore permit anglers looking to fish the famed flats of central and southern Belize. Over the years, Lincoln and his guides developed into some of the most experienced and skilled permit guides found anywhere in the world. With literally thousands of permit landed out of Lincoln’s skiff over the years, Lincoln’s knowledge of his home waters and the fish that inhabit them are legendary. These days Lincoln is still pursuing the permit he has spent his career studying and his passion for sharing his home waters with traveling anglers and his fellow guides has not diminished in the slightest. Lincoln’s lodge is now closed (awaiting renovation) but he and his team of guides have partnered with a company that owns several outstanding resorts in Placencia, Hopkins and off-shore from Dangriga in the heart of some of the world’s best permit flats. Fly Water will help guests select from one of four luxury accommodations and Lincoln and his guides will meet you on-site, taking care of all your fishing and guiding needs.
Casa Blanca, Mexico
Located at the southern end of Ascension Bay in the heart of the 1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an biosphere preserve, Casa Blanca Lodge has established itself as one of Mexico’s premier saltwater fly fishing destinations. For nearly twenty years Casa Blanca has enthralled anglers with its remote access to Ascension Bay and its superb attention to detail and first rate service. Ascension Bay offers a massive zone of productive water for permit and Casa Blanca is situated in a remote corner of the bay, allowing quick access to the most seldom fished zones. To better the odds, consider going in the summer or fall to avoid the crowds and let us confirm the trip for you with one of our preferred permit guides at the lodge.
Copal Tree Lodge, Belize
The beautiful Copal Tree Lodge is perched above the small village of Punta Gorda, Belize on a jungle hillside very near the southern border with Guatemala. Anglers spend their days chasing permit in the capable hands of the Garbutt brothers and their guiding team. The Garbutt’s remain some of the most sought-after, experienced and skilled permit guides found anywhere in the world. The fishery focuses on two main zones that are accessible out of the Garbutt’s marina. The first is an outer coral flats zone that encompasses some 130+ small islands forming the main archipelago of the Sapodilla Cayes. A secondary near shore lagoon area provides a change of pace and also shelter in the event of adverse weather conditions. The lagoon is a large shallow area with a soft bottom that is perfect for hunting tailing fish.
Cuba’s diverse and varied fishing programs are in a class by themselves. The permit fishing can be spectacular and the call of wild, unpressured flats remains the stuff that angling dreams are made of. However, beyond all of this, its a truly magical time in history to visit this remarkable island nation. With an array of experiences and permit programs available in Cuba, we just had to put them into a category of their own!
The Palometa Club (which translates to the “The Permit Club”) is an exclusive fly fishing lodge located in Punta Allen, Mexico on the northeastern edge of the famed permit and bonefish flats of Ascension Bay. Managed by one of the sport’s most experienced lodge operators and staffed with some of the bay’s premier guides, Palometa Club caters to fly anglers who are serious about stalking permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook. Aside from great food and accommodations, the club’s defining feature is their one angler to one guide formula, enabling the intrepid wade fishing angler to have at least one set of experienced eyes tracking their target at all times. At the end of the day, this can make all the difference, as catching permit under the best of conditions is far from easy.
