You’re invited to join Fly Water Travel’s Andy Archer at one of the best locations in the world to chase juvenile tarpon on the fly. Tarpon Cay Lodge lies in the quaint fishing village of San Felipe on the northern shore of the Yucatan Peninsula approximately 3 hours drive from Cancun. The beauty of this fishery lies in the fact that abundant opportunities exist to chase tarpon ranging in size from 6 to 25 lbs in very shallow, clear water. Sight fishing with floating lines is the name of the game at Tarpon Cay Lodge, and typically casts are directed at rolling fish, nervous water, wakes and pushes with a limited amount of blind casting in likely spots. At times, schools of fish in the 100’s can be seen feeding on the surface. Whether you are new to tarpon fishing or a seasoned veteran, this is a fantastic destination to target one of the most exhilarating and sought-after saltwater species in the world!
Guests will stay at the Hotel San Felipe de Jesus on the water’s edge. Each room is equipped with air-conditioning, fans, private bathrooms with hot/cold water and large windows facing out toward the water. Meals are served in the dining area on the first floor of the hotel and consist of a host of fresh seafood and traditional Mexican cuisine. Breakfasts are ordered the night before and served promptly in the morning to ensure you get on the water right as the sun is rising. Lunches consists of made to order sandwiches, snacks and assorted beverages. A housekeeping service cleans the room and replaces linens, towels, bottled drinking water, cups and bar soap each day. The hotel features a nice rooftop balcony providing a splendid 360-degree view of the area, making it the perfect place to reminisce on the fish of the day and watch the sun slip away with a cocktail in hand.
This will be Andy’s second trip to Tarpon Cay Lodge and he is incredibly excited to return to San Felipe to share this experience with a group of anglers. You are invited to join him and see for yourself why Tarpon Cay Lodge is truly one of the Yucatan Peninsula’s crown jewels of fly fishing.
