One of our favorite new Pacific Northwest programs, the Umpqua Winter Basecamp hosted by Renton River Adventures, has kicked off their season and it has gotten off to a strong start. Check out this short write up and some recent pictures from Umpqua Winter Basecamp head guide Dillon Renton from the first few weeks of the season:

“As we approach the end of January, winter steelhead have been present in the Umpqua system for over a month. While fishing for winter run fish is full of dynamic conditions, such as flows and water clarity, fishing has been fair to good this winter with steelhead spread out from the lower end of the basin and through the fly water. Both swing fishing and using indicators while dead drifting from the boat have been effective. The fish we have been lucky to land have been bright and beautiful; primarily in the 6-10 lb class with a few fish in the upper teens seen as well! As the season continues, the run should build with more steelhead making their way into the rivers we fish. With good water levels and weather, confidence is currently high for February and March fishing in the Umpqua basin.”
