Kamchatka is one of the largest peninsulas in the world, about the size of New Zealand. Its land mass juts towards the south from Siberia and into the Bering Sea. With a population of just under 350,000, over half living in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and many of the rest along the coastlines, virtually none of the interior lands has been impacted by man. The rivers here are pristine, healthy and an anglers paradise. The trout are as wild as the land and their aggressive nature quickly evident. Kamchatka is similar to Alaska with most of the same plants and animals, comparable weather; and all life on the peninsula depends on annual runs of salmon. All trips to Kamchatka are rustic, wild and they are not for everyone. They require a reasonable degree of physical fitness and mental stamina. The payoff is that the trout fishing is like nothing you’ve ever seen and in a place few people will ever visit.
