Many anglers gravitate towards chasing steelhead and for good reason. Steelhead check off many boxes with much of the attraction based on their power, beauty, athleticism and willingness to chase a fly. While incredibly rewarding, steelhead fishing is not a numbers game and conditions certainly dictate success. So where could one find good numbers of chrome fish and not worry about a blown out river? Enter Alaska and its adfluvial rainbow trout. Instead of going to the ocean, they migrate to large lakes to feed. When comparing, its nearly impossible to find a difference between an andromous and an adfluvial rainbow trout. Visibly, they are mirror images and when connected to the end of a fly line, they act much the same. There are two prominent systems where these special fish are encountered, both outflows of incredibly large lakes so they never blow out. Two of our favorite lodges call these rivers their home water. Their packages allow guests the best access to these amazing fish and all with high levels of service and comfort. Below are the best available dates at these lodges to target the “other steelhead”.
