The Florida Keys Fly Fishing School is the longest-running and most sought-after saltwater fly fishing school available. Run by the Keys legend Sandy Moret, these schools teach anglers of all skill levels the most important aspects of targeting the grand slam species: tarpon, bonefish, permit and snook. These schools include two days of classroom coursework, interspersed with personal casting sessions, followed by two days of guided flats fishing.

Now in its 30th year offering world class fly fishing instruction in a fun and no-pressure environment, the Florida Keys Fly Fishing School has helped thousands of men and women both newcomers and seasoned veterans to become better anglers, teaching them every aspect of saltwater fly fishing. During classroom sessions, you’ll cover tackle, including rod and reel technology, fly line selection and essential knots. During casting instruction, you’ll master the double-haul, learn effective false casting, line management, and how to make short quick casts. You’ll also spend time getting acquainted with a flats skiff, learning how best to fish with a sightfishing guide and boat etiquette. Tuition includes evening receptions with the instructors, lunches on school days, curriculum guide, all instruction, classroom work, and the use of our equipment and training aids for casting. You will leave the school with the skills, knowledge and confidence that would take months or even years of trial and error to overcome. Without a doubt, the school’s greatest asset are the instructors, all of whom are recognized the world over as true authorities. You won’t find a more experienced and passionate group willing to share from their personal experiences.

Recommended Tackle:
Generally speaking, each of the grand slam species – bonefish, permit and tarpon – requires a unique rod, reel and line setup. When also considering other potential target species – baby tarpon, snook, redfish, seatrout, jack crevalle – the saltwater angler’s quiver could be extensive. A great benefit of the Florida Keys Fly Fishing School is a detailed overview of saltwater fly fishing tackle; when and why to choose one weight of rod over another, for example. Students will have the opportunity to try a multitude of the latest and greatest fly rod models, in various weights from today’s popular manufacturers.

The above said, Fly Water Travel recommends the following setups as a baseline for the grand slam species.
