Fly Water Travel Schools

New for 2020, Fly Water Travel is excited to offer a portfolio of educational fly fishing packages for anglers of all skill levels. We feel strongly that effective fly fishing schools combine dedicated informational sessions plus guided fishing time, and our hand-picked programs do just that. All schools are hosted by talented professional instructors and guides and are sure to improve your fishing and casting skills so you can get the most out of your time on the water.

Trout School at Sage Lodge, Montana with Angler’s West Flyfishing Outfitters
The Trout School at Sage Lodge, Montana is the ultimate educational course to improve an angler’s trout fishing. Co-hosted by Angler’s West owner, outfitter and Sage Ambassador Matson Rogers and Fly Water Travel’s Pro Sales Manager Jesse Robbins, the school combines on-site instruction and education with on-the-water guided fishing, for a holistic approach to learning and improving your fly fishing for trout. The location offers easy access to the Yellowstone River, the famous Paradise Valley spring creeks, and Yellowstone National Park.
Rate: $3,200 per person for a 5 night/4 day package, based on single occupancy

Florida Keys Fly Fishing School, Florida
The Florida Keys Fly Fishing School is the longest-running and most sought-after saltwater fly fishing school available. Run by the legend Sandy Moret, these schools teach anglers of all skill levels the most important aspects of targeting tarpon, bonefish, and permit. These schools include two days of classroom coursework, interspersed with personal casting sessions, followed by two days of guided flats fishing. Grande Ronde Spey School, Oregon
Join renowned Spey casting instructor and Sage Ambassador Scott O’Donnell along with his crew of die-hard steelhead guides at Speywater Lodge for four days of Spey instruction and steelhead fishing. Scott and his crew are master instructors and the Grande Ronde is the best place we know of to learn the art of Spey casting while improving every element of your swing fishing game. Truckee Trout School, California
Join the talented team of guides and instructors at Matt Heron Fly Fishing for their all-inclusive Truckee Trout School. These introductory schools utilize three unique fishing venues, creating a broad experiential base for aspiring trout anglers. Day one starts with an outdoor lesson covering gear, knots, rigging, and aquatic entomology, followed by casting instruction and guided fishing on private stocked ponds. Day two takes place on the famous Truckee River, where students will learn about indicator fishing, tight-line nymphing, streamer fishing, bug sampling, and more. Day three will take place on the Little Truckee River, the region’s local tailwater. Here students will learn about dry fly fishing as well as dry-dropper techniques and, we hope, have the chance to fight big fish on light tippets with small flies. Subsurface Fly Fishing School, California
In most cases, trout spend 90 percent of their time feeding subsurface. Sage Elite Pro Matt Heron has designed his Subsurface Schools to teach students the most effective methods out there; he focuses on indicator fishing and euro-style nymphing (ESN). Guests will learn the skills needed to effectively cover all water types using both techniques. These schools take place on the famous Truckee River near Lake Tahoe, California. The Truckee is best known for its large, hard-fighting wild trout. It is a nymph fisherman’s dream, with riffles, runs, and pools, as well as miles of pocket water, perfectly suited to a range of subsurface techniques. Additional dates and custom classes available.

PRO Outfitters Kid’s Camp, Montana
The PRO Outfitters Kid’s Camp is designed to be a fun, engaging summer camp for kids 11 to 18. Their goal is to give kids the ability to pick up a fly rod with enthusiasm and to leave them feeling comfortable and capable in any freshwater setting. They work to show kids a great time on and off the water. Camp takes place at the beautiful North Fork Crossing Lodge, which is a deluxe tent camp overlooking the legendary North Fork of the Blackfoot River, made famous by Norman Mclean’s A River Runs Through It and is open to all skill levels.

Sweetwater Guide School, Montana
Sweetwater’s Guide School is our top pick for anglers and aspiring guides to take their skills to the professional level. With the help of seasoned international guides, students will learn how to interact with clients, how to most effectively give instruction, and most importantly, how to consistently get anglers onto fish. Additionally, these schools will cover knot tying, fish netting, rowing skills, jet boat operation, motor maintenance, and advanced river/water reading. While these schools are a great way to improve one’s own fly fishing skills, they provide a huge leg up for all interested in taking their passion to a professional level. Klamath Spey Camp, California
Join Sage Elite Pro Gino Bernero and the rest of the Confluence Outfitters guide staff on the Lower Klamath River for a weekend of Spey casting instruction and summer steelhead fishing. Gino’s well-organized tent camp is located several miles upstream from the Klamath Glen boat launch on Starwein Riffle, one of the best swing-fishing runs on the Lower Klamath. Guests target chrome-bright steelhead just entering the river system mere miles from the saltwater. With a maximum of three guests per guide, everyone receives a high degree of personal attention. The instructional program highlights the most effective casting and fishing techniques for pursuing summer steelhead, and also overviews appropriate tackle.
