Tucked away in eastern Oregon, not far from Boise Idaho, Oregon’s finest trophy-brown trout river flows discreetly through desert rim-rock and sage. It is a relatively small river but its honey-colored browns are anything but small, averaging 16 to 20 inches with significantly larger fish present. The Owyhee is known for it’s vibrant insect hatches, most notably the Skwala Stonefly hatch that occurs mid-March through mid-April. This can be one of the most productive times on the Owyhee, as the trout are presented with their first major insect hatch of the season. The opportunity to fish for large brown trout with dry flies in the early spring is not one to be missed!
Cory Godell has been fishing the Owyhee for over 20 years and now offers a full-service program on the river perfectly suited to visiting anglers. Cory sets up a comfortable tent camp on a piece of private riverside property for guests to stay in during their trip. With spacious wall tents furnished with cots and pads, hearty meals and short drive times to the fishing grounds, this is a fantastic way to experience the Owyhee River during this limited window of opportunity.
