We have been receiving a few emails and calls in the last few weeks ever since the Australian PM unveiled plans to evacuate some of its nationals from Wuhan to Christmas Island that were potentially exposed to the recent Coronavirus outbreak. Fly anglers, take a deep breath and relax – this is not the same Christmas Island that you are traveling to. For those that do not know, there are two different Christmas Island’s on Earth. The island that quarantined evacuees are being sent to lies approximately 1,600 miles NW of mainland Australia (see picture above). Kiritimati, more commonly known as Christmas Island, is the atoll that we send fly anglers to week after week. This landmass is located approximately 1,400 miles due south of Hawaii in the south Pacific. See picture below.

In summary, anglers who have booked a fishing trip to Kiritimati (Christmas Island) or were considering one for the future, rest assured knowing that the Australian evacuees of the recent Coronavirus outbreak will be on the other Christmas Island for the short term. That being said, our hearts go out to those who have been affected and impacted by this recent outbreak.
