Not a week goes by in which I am not asked about which destinations simultaneously offer great rainbow fishing and salmon fishing in Alaska. This is an important question and the answer varies depending on what species of salmon is of interest and what techniques are preferred when targeting the trout. It just so happens that the early season king and chum salmon runs coincide with some of the best streamer and mouse fishing for rainbows. July offers the greatest diversity of salmon available and tactics employed to catch trout while the later runs of silver salmon coincide with the best bead and flesh fishing for big rainbows. Fortunately these cycles are fairly predictable and allow anglers to plan exactly the trip they want. Helping anglers understand these cycles and matching them with the best possible destination is the ultimate goal. Full fly out lodges can quickly travel great distances and offer the flexibility to visit many different systems to find fresh salmon and the best rainbow rivers available. Base camps offer a great value when targeting both rainbows and salmon on the same trip. Not all destinations are equal when it comes to their access to fresh salmon rivers and quality trout systems. Below you will see a cross section of our favorite Alaska venues for these combo trips.
