Our friends at Alba Game Fishing in Scotland are offering a hosted trip with access to one of Speyside’s most famous beats, the Lower Pitchroy. This is a rare opportunity to gain access to one of the Spey’s best beats at the best time of year. Four anglers will join Alba Game Fishing’s owner and head guide Stewart Collingswood, River Spey expert Daniella Morey and resident River Spey gillie Andrew Hall for three days of world-class, two-handed angling on one of the world’s most famous rivers.
Alba Game Fishing guide Dani Morey describes the Lower Pitchroy beat:
“Lower Pitchroy is a magical place to fish and a definite hidden gem of the salmon fishing world. The beat is perfectly positioned away from any roads or traffic, the only sound tends to be the natural wildlife and, very occasionally, a lost walker on the far bank wandering along the Speyside Way. It is scenically stunning, typically Scottish with native pine trees and broadleaf trees providing canopy and cover for red squirrels, roe deer, buzzards and the like. I have twice witnessed roe deer swimming across The Spey as I fish here! It truly is the privileged angler that is able to experience and share this place with nature. In spring the flora provides a beautiful carpet of snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, wood columbine and other native flowers. May is one of the most lovely times to fish the river, warmer weather and a good chance of a fresh fish. As you know, the old adage used to be “May on The Spey”. . . .
The fishing is double bank and there is a boat available in most pools although the wading is easy and even the inexperienced angler will be able to cover the water. Pools are a wonderful mix of typical Spey streamy water and gentle glides. The sort of pools that from the top of each one can see fish swimming into the tail of the pool and each cast is filled with expectation and anticipation. This is the type of fishing that holds you captive and keeps you going for “just one more cast”!
I live, sleep and breathe this river and have been fortunate enough to fish many others but it is Lower Pitchroy above all other beats that holds a special place in my heart. This is such a captivating place and those who fish here will find that any other salmon fishing in Scotland will fade into a distant memory.”
