New Orleans, Lousiana – Redfish

The southern Louisiana swamp is a beautiful and simple landscape of grassy marshlands, interspersed with a maze of channels, flats and islands. Its prized inhabitants are bull redfish that show up in the winter months and have the potential for some fish to push 40lbs. These fish are aggressive and most shots at fish occur quite close to the boat which provides for a real thrill.

This is a fantastic trip for those looking for an effective fall/winter escape that is still close to home. While the sometimes cold temperatures can make angling a challenge, redfish are a cold water species and as long as they see your fly, they will eat it. There may not be a better close-to-home option for winter flats fishing than chasing these big bull reds. Redfish at this time of year often float high in the water column or cruise shorelines in search of shrimp and crabs. They often expose their backs above the water or what is known as ‘backing’. This situation is one of the most exciting to encounter, as the fish will often eat anything they see.

Guests will arrive and depart through New Orleans which can make for a fun addition to your trip. You’ll meet your guide in Cocodrie, about a 45 minute drive south of Houma, where guests stay at the local Marriott (or an assorted selection of AirBNB’s) with easy access to restaurants and amenities.
