Having operated in the region for more than fifty years, Belize River Lodge has a vast and varied saltwater fly fishing program that can target the region’s most spectacular species, including bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook, barracuda and snapper.
Their newest program is called the Long Caye Island Resort, which offers groups of 2 – 6 anglers an incredible experience in a very unique and remote setting. This private camp sits on an island called Long Caye which lays about 45 minutes northeast of Belize City and is reachable only by boat. The caye is surrounded by a plethora of flats, deep channels, lagoons and mangrove edges. The resort itself is a beautifully crafted three bedroom, one bathroom house with a large deck and a surrounding palm tree lined beach area.
This unique and intimate lodge experience provides small groups of anglers a private and exclusive home base from which to launch their saltwater excursions. Separate from the main building are staff quarters where the guides and private chef reside during your stay. Runs to productive fishing grounds are mostly kept short as the remote location of the resort places it squarely on some of the most productive flats systems in Belize.
If you’re looking for a private saltwater experience, free of the trappings of a bigger lodge operation and access to some of the most productive bonefish, permit and tarpon waters found anywhere in Belize, then look no further than the Belize River Lodge’s, Long Caye Island Resort.
The Long Caye Island Resort is located on Long Caye in Belize. The time in Belize is one hour later than the Pacific Time Zone.
Fishing Program: The coast of Belize is a complex system of river mouths, creeks, lagoons, flats, small cayes, mangrove islands and barrier reef. The ecosystem that exists here supports millions of crabs, shrimp, bait fish and other aquatic life, which is why there is an abundance of game fish.
As with the fishing program at Belize River Lodge, guides may fish long hours. The Long Caye Island Resort sits in some of Belize’s best fishing waters and offers anglers the ability to customize their fishing day by choosing to fish early in the morning and/or fish late into the evening. Options to head back to the lodge for lunch during “slack tides” exist or pre-made sandwiches can be made to maximize time on the water. Often many anglers choose to take a short “siesta” if coming back in for lunch during the hottest (and sometimes most unproductive) part of the fishing day, then fish late into the evening and come back to the island at the end of your fishing day. After the fishing day watch the stunning beauty of a Belizean sunset with a rum punch in hand and appetizers on the deck of your private saltwater fishing oasis.
Before or after a day of fishing, or if you get “antsy” while on the island on your first day, or can’t get enough fishing before you leave on your last day, there are beach fishing options just a short walk away from the lodge. Bonefish and permit are found on a hard sand spit, right in front of the resort.
Fly fishing for bonefish is a year-round pursuit in Belize. Belize’s bonefish tend to be smaller than in other countries, however, they are very plentiful. Bonefish within this ecosystem vary from 2 to 8 pounds, with the majority being approximately 3 pounds. As a note, bonefish are considered to be one of the most powerful fish, per pound, for their size.
The explosive snook, saltwater’s bass, can be found in sizes of 5 to 25 pounds. Snook fly fishing is also good year-round, however, low tides make casting to these fish easier, so November through April are the optimal months if you only want to fly fish for snook.
Tarpon, the silver king, is one of the most acrobatic fish sought by saltwater anglers. Tarpon are categorized in two categories, tarpon and large tarpon. Belize has a resident population of large tarpon, however in the spring and summer migrating tarpon visit these waters, making for larger numbers of these big fish. While you can fly fish for large tarpon year-round, the bigger tarpon are primarily found in the months of March through early August.
The Belize coast is known worldwide for its permit fishing flats. When fly fishing from the resort, permit range from 5 to over 30 pounds. The best time to fish for permit is when there is less wind, usually the months between April and September, or when your schedule allows. Permit fly fishing is very weather dependent and any day of the year can be good permit weather.
Anglers fish two to a boat with one guide and take turns. Wading the flats is minimal due to mostly silted and very soft bottoms. Some opportunities do exist, however, so please be sure to let your guide know if this is something that you’re interested in.
Non-Angling Activities: The location of the resort is extremely quiet, peaceful and very remote. Non-anglers may take advantage of fantastic snorkeling, swimming and birding right from the lodge or simply relax in a picturesque setting. Excursions to the livelier Caye Caulker can easily be arranged which will offer non-anglers the ability to shop, dine or explore a safe and tourist centered locale. St. George’s caye is also very reachable by skiff.
Accommodations and Meals: The Long Caye Island Resort has three double occupancy bedrooms, two twin beds in each room and a shared bathroom downstairs (hot & cold water), thereby catering to groups of up to six people. The main building has a full verandah overlooking the beach and sea. The rooms have ceiling fans and plenty of breezy windows but no air conditioning. Power is provided by a generator which will run while you are visiting.
The Lodge is well known for its Belizean hospitality and their delicious Belizean Creole cuisine; diets are usually set aside for your visit. The same wonderful Belize River Lodge cooks will be preparing your meals at the resort, so a delicious variety of meals will be served daily.
Let the chef know your plans each day for lunch and she can have a meal prepared for you when you get back to the island, or if you’re making a full day of it she will pack you a boxed lunch to take along.
Belikin beer is stocked and readily available as is One Barrel Rum. If you would like any other alcoholic beverages while on the island, please let the lodge know and it can be purchased by the bottle.
