Until recently, North Africa, and especially the coast of Sudan has never been considered a viable fishing destination. Political unrest in neighboring Southern Sudan has cast an image that has been badly portrayed and dampened the potential for Sudanese tourism. Along the Red Sea coast of Sudan there are countless islands and wide expanses of shallow water flats. These offer the adventurous fly angler a treasure chest of fly fishing opportunities. In 2013, Tourette Fishing began the long process of exploring as much of the coast as possible in order to evaluate the fly fishing potential. It didn’t take long to see the massive potential, as the flats were home to incredible numbers of triggerfish, Bluefin, GTs, Bohar as well as shots at bonefish and permit.
Despite the bad reputation of the country, Sudan is a very inviting, friendly, and safe place to travel, and for years has been the center for an exploding diving industry. In the future, there is no doubt that the Nubian Flats of the Red Sea will become a well-recognized flats destination as fly fisherman experience the magic of the Sudan coast.
The six full days fishing on this trip allows you the opportunity to engage yourself in the numerous fishing activities which this unique venue has to offer. Under the watchful eye of your professional guide, the majority of the time will be focused on exploring the flats, cuts and drop-offs of offshore islands. The sight fishing for tailing triggerfish on the flats is exceptional, along with good numbers of Bluefin, Bohar, GT’s, Barracuda and grouper species. Bonefish, permit, bumpies and milkfish are present and a normal week presents a few opportunities to target these iconic flats species. Teasing produces exceptional, exciting fishing, and the offshore potential is huge for Dogtooth and GT’s.
The Mothership – Scuba Libre:
The nature of the fishery makes a live aboard option perfectly suited for the needs of fly fisherman visiting the Nubian Flats. The Scuba Libre is a 60 foot steel hull catamaran. Guests stay in two main cabins in the front of the boat. Each cabin sleeps three people with space for luggage. There are also two smaller cabins in the rear of the boat. One can be available for guest and the guides stay in the other. The living area comprises of a saloon dining area, as well as a top deck. The living conditions on the liveabord are basic, but comfortable and there is always an extremely relaxed atmosphere. Guests often enjoy snorkelling off the back of the boat after a day on the flats, as well as sleeping on the top deck under the stars
There are two 23 ft Pangas that accompany the mothership which allows easy access to the numerous islands and flats. There is also the new addition of a 30 ft sport fishing boat that is powered by 2 x 175 hp outboards. The addition of this speedboat will have a massive difference on how quickly we will be able to access more areas. These areas will be islands and flats that have previously been out of range, but will now become a reality. A very exciting prospect in deed, as all of these have never before been fished and are sure to deliver some excellent prospects.
