The Sandy River is located in one of the most remote places an angler can visit. This may not be a foreign country, but its exotic nature is evident and the terrain is unique. This wide open expanse has its own breathtaking beauty. Volcanoes rise in the distance and are easily seen on clear days because of the lack of “standing” vegetation. The Sandy River Lodge may not be easy to reach but its fishing potential make it all worth the effort. The Sandy River is blessed with some of the best king salmon fishing in the world. The fish are fresh from the salt, packed with strength and take flies aggressively. The average fish are 15 to 25 pounds, while there is always the chance to hook into a fish 30 pounds or greater. Along with the awesome king fishery, which lasts from June through July, there is a mighty steelhead run that begins in September and runs through October. Like any anadromous fishery, the conditions will dictate success. With the lack of trees and being in the open expanse of the Aleutian Peninsula the weather can change quickly. Dealing with windy conditions is common, so be prepared, have patience and the rewards will be forever engrained in your memory.
Sandy River Lodge is located on the Alaska Peninsula.
The Sandy River Lodge is located a short distance from the banks of the river. There are great steelhead runs a quick walk away. Most of the king fishing will be done downstream of the lodge, accessed by jet boats. The lodge has several jet boats and the experienced guides will ferry you to the best fishing. All fishing will be done while wading and the rivers gravel bottom and low gradient make the wading easy by most standards. The fishing will begin early, after a hearty Alaskan breakfast. Anglers generally take a riverside lunch to maximize fishing time. The guided day usually ends with anglers tired and ready for a good dinner and some much needed sleep.
Accommodations and Meals:
All rooms are double occupancy. Bathroom and shower facilities are shared. Housekeeping and linens are supplied. The wooden lodge is comfortable and is a great place for anglers to convene for meals and tell stories. A hearty breakfast is served early before your days fishing. Upon return, hors-d’oeuvres are ready, along with limited wine (anglers who favor certain alcoholic beverages are encouraged to bring their own or pre-order). After some storytelling, a family style dinner will be served.
