Slovenian Alps, Hiking, and Fishing Slovenia

For those that enjoy being in the mountains, this twelve day hiking and fishing trip puts you square in the middle of the best Slovenia has to offer.   After a brief stop in the wonderful capital city of Ljubljana, this hiking and fishing tour takes you strait to the foothills of the Slovenian Alps.  There you will stay in four post-card perfect towns.  After the first two days of hiking in Kranjska Gora, the tour moves through Bled, Bohinj, and Bovec.  From these wonderful towns you will have the option of fishing one of the many streams including the Scoca, Idrijca, and Sava Bohinjka, as well as many of their tributaries.  Self guided hiking in the foothills of the alps is also a favorite option.


Start discovery with Ljubljana city, capital of Slovenia. Transfer from Ljubljana airport to hotel is included.
Main attractions include the Slovene capital, old town center, the lovely “fin de siecle” mansions, and the mighty fortress above the city.
Relax with a drink on the bank of Ljubljanica river.  Enjoy an evening walk with the lights and sounds of the city. Accommodation is in the 4 star hotel Slon.

Day 2: ARRIVAL IN KRANJSKA GORA, HIKE TO SREDNJI VRH  12 km/ascent  250 m. Hillside & meadow walk.
After breakfast transfer from Ljubljana to  the famous ski resort of Kranjska Gora (80 min).  In route you will be dropped off at starting point of hike in Gozd Martuljek. Enjoy breath taking views on the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and hike to Srednji Vrh which offers views over valley and mountains.  Hike to your 4 star hotel accommodation passing beautiful Jasna Lake.

Day 3: KRANJSKA GORA  – THREE COUNTRIES POINT – KRANJSKA GORA 22 km round trip / ascent 640 m. Forest and mountain meadows trail (hotel 4 star).
This warm-up walk takes you to the summit of Mt. Peč (1508 m) to the triple border point where Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet. At the top you can soak up the dramatic views across the Julian and Carnian Alps, with Hohe Tauern, the highest alpine range in Austria, forming a picturesque backdrop. The trail then descends through the valley to the source of the mighty Sava River, the longest in Slovenia, and back to Podkoren via Kranjska Gora ski resort.


Hiking alternate:
  11 kms / ascent 200 m. Valley & meadow walk (4 star hotel).
You will begin your walk after a car transfer through the Radovna Valley, an untouched wilderness between the Pokljuka and Mežakla plateaus. You will be dropped off at the start of the stunning 1.6 km Vintgar Gorge, carved 150 m deep into the mountains by the Radovna River. The trail leads along a wooden walkway through the gorge and onwards to the world-famous Bled Lake, via the lovely Katarina Church viewpoint. Your hotel is on the western side of the town, overlooking the lake.


Hiking alternate:
15 km round trip / ascent 270 m. Hillsides and panoramic walk (hotel 4 star).
Today you will take a leisurely stroll into Bled, a world famous town on the shore of a beautiful glacial lake, with its unique island church sitting proudly in the lake, and the castle perched high upon a cliff standing guard over the town. A short panoramic walk can be taken to the villages of Kupljenik and Bela. For the best photos of the lake, castle and Karawanke range, photographers will want to ascend Osojnica. End the day with the local speciality – the cream cake “Kremšnita” – in one of the great little tea shops beside the lake.

Day 6: BLED - RADOVLJICA – TALEZ HILL – LAKE BLED 13 km round trip. Alpine walk (4 star hotel).
10 min transfer to start of hike. Starting on the town square of Radovljica you start your hike with a short climb from the confluence of the two Sava Rivers takes you up to the Jelovica high plateau, a popular walk for locals; mostly because it’s a great picnic spot to enjoy good food and cold beer amid the sweeping vistas of the opposing Karavanke mountain range. The return to Bled leads you along the quiet, shady riverside of the Sava Bohinjka.

Day 7: (car transfer 20 min) POKLJUKA – USKOVNICA SADLE – LAKE BOHINJ 12 kms / ascent 200 m. Mountain meadows & tree line walk (4 star hotel).
You will be driven by car up to the Pokljuka Plateau from which you will begin your hike across mountain pastures and old farmhouses where you will come to a viewing point providing outstanding views into the Bohinj Valley. As you descend you can stop at the little historic village of Studor where you can visit the museum and see how people lived 150 years ago. Your final destination is Lake Bohinj, the jewel in the heart of the Triglav National Park, and the small settlement of Ribčev Laz (Fisherman’s Pass).


Hiking alternate:
16 / 23 kms. Lakeside / valley walk (4 star hotel).
Spend the day strolling around this wonderful, tranquil lake sitting in the shadows of the immense mountains of the Julian Alps. Warm weather permitting, you can swim in its crystal clear water. Try the delicious Bohinj trout. At the western end of the lake is a short trail up to Savica Waterfall, which feeds the lake. Then you can take the cable car up to the 1,532 meter high Vogel Mountain for a spectacular view of Mount Triglav, the highest peak in the Julian Alps. Spend the evening in one of the cozy village pubs and try the local home-made honey brandy.

Day 9: (car transfer 120 min)  BOHINJ – BOVEC. Canyon and hillside walk (4 star hotel).
A morning car transfer brings you to the starting point of your walk – entrance to the Moznica river canyon. The landscape and surrounding mountains you will walk through were once background to many WWI battles. Several bitter battles were fought here between the Austrian Empire and the Italians. The trail passes by the remains of many once mighty fortifications.


Hiking alternate:
14 km. Riverside / valley walk.  (4 star hotel). The final day takes you to the "Queen of the Alpine Waters" – the emerald-colored River Soca. Its breathtaking colors have wowed many walkers and water sportsmen for centuries. Freshen up in one of the shallow ponds and continue on towards Kluze Fortress. Built more than a century ago to block access to Southern Austria, it has survived all subsequent wars and is now an impressive anti-war museum.

Day 11: BOVEC  – VIRJE WATERFALL – BOVEC 13.5 kms. (4 star hotel). Mountain meadows & forest walks. A relaxing stroll brings you to the western town of Bovec, where the theme here is pure water. A little stream with an impossibly pronounceable name, Gljun, is fed by the vast underground world of the Kanin limestone range. Depending on the weather and season, its waters tumble down a 30-foot waterfall before entering the Soca River. The return to Bovec takes you through broad meadows resplendent with summer wildflowers, whose backdrop is dominated by the “Slovene Matterhorn”, Mt. Svinjak. Visit Kobarid Museum –  World War I and Iszonzo front.  Afternoon transfer to your 4 star hotel in Ljubljana.

Day 12: Departure after breakfast, transfer to Ljubljana airport.
