Stonefly Lodge New Zealand

Built from local stone and timber, this exclusive riverfront property sits on 156 acres of private forest and offers luxury accommodations in close proximity to three spectacular national parks (Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes, and Kahurangi). The lodge’s large stone fireplace and the open kitchen adjoining the dining area create a warm, earthy atmosphere and a great base from which to explore the region’s parks and fisheries.

Fishing Program:
The fishing program at Stonefly Lodge is centered around the elusive brown trout with the emphasis being on quality over quantity. The average size of brown trout in this region is approx. 4lb-5lb, and there is a real potential of seeing an 8lb plus fish on any day. The Lodge is ideally situated on the banks of the Motueka River between the confluence of the Wangapeka River and the confluence of the Baton River, allowing guests immediate access to some of the best fly fishing waters in New Zealand. Further afield, guests can access dozens of quality fly fishing streams and rivers within the Nelson Lakes and northern Murchison region and with the aid of a helicopter, dozens more locations become available. The wide choice of rivers available enables guests to experience relatively gentle, easy-flowing rivers with easy access to more adventurous, backcountry streams requiring more accurate casting and a suitable level of fitness. The location also allows a wide choice of rivers from different catchment systems giving guides the opportunity to pick the most appropriate fly fishing destination according to the various flow rates at a particular time of year.

Accommodation and Meals:
Architecturally designed and engineered, the Lodge is built from natural stone and timber acquired from the 150-acre property. Stonefly Lodge is designed to meet the needs of the most discerning traveler and yet provide home comforts with personalized hospitality from the experienced hosts.

The Lodge interior focuses on the large stone double sided fireplace which provides the ambiance to the games room, dining room and sunroom. A large open kitchen adjoining the dining area offers the relaxed atmosphere where guest dine together. The cuisine is made fresh from the extensive garden with homemade produce, local quality meats, and fresh seasonal seafood. Special diets are easily catered for.

Four guest rooms are located upstairs complete with ensuites, heated towel rails, and private balconies overlooking the Motueka River and surrounding mountains. Each room has a super king bed that can split to two singles, allowing the lodge to accommodate 4 couples or 8 singles at a time.

Additional experiences:
Stonefly Lodge is an ideal base to explore the Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes, and Kahurangi National Parks, along with all the wineries and craft studios the region is renowned for. The location for the Lodge was chosen not only because of the unique river settings and world class fly fishing opportunities, but also for its position in relation to the main attractions of the wider region. Three of New Zealand's major national parks and Nelson's regional wineries are all within an hour's drive from the lodge. The owners and hosts John and Kate Kerr are always on hand and happy to help set up everything from a day trip to Abel Tasman to a Heli hiking adventure in the backcountry.
