Overview

Fly Water Travel is proud to be the exclusive North American agent for Alba Game Fishing and together, we are excited to offer fully customizable tours of Scotland. These tours are ideal for couples that want to experience the warmth and hospitality of the Scottish people, see the country’s most historic and beautiful places, and sample a number of the country’s premier fisheries along the way. These tours offer visits to historic cities, castles, islands surrounded by clear blue seas, lochs, spas, distilleries, and of course great private beats of fly water. Trips are designed for private parties of two to six people and include a private driver and four-star, boutique accommodations.

The process of creating a custom trip to Scotland is easy. Over a phone conversation, we discuss all the necessary details such as group size, preferred travel dates, angling interests and preferences, non-angling activities, physical abilities, and any special interests. From that, we design a draft itinerary for review. Once we dial in the plan, we set up the reservations and then create the final itinerary. Smaller parties of one to three guests are typically met at the airport by their private driver and guide in a luxury Land Rover Discovery while larger groups will be picked up in one or more new Mercedes touring vans. All state-of-the-art fishing tackle and flies are included so guests do not need to pack any of those items unless they want to. Shortly into the trip, the guide reviews the entire itinerary and makes any required last-minute adjustments. From there, it is off to enjoying the fishing and many attractions of Scotland. To date, literally every group has raved about the overall quality of these trips with many returning year after year to explore new corners of this enchanting country.

Fishing Program

Guests can enjoy four distinct types of fishing, often with multiple venues of each type. Because there is so much to do and see, most of our guests spend less than half of their days fishing, but for those that want to fish nearly every day, that is also possible. Again, all fishing tackle for the different fishing venues is provided, making packing simple. Basic fly fishing classes are also available for those interested in learning the sport near where it all began.

Scotland is synonymous with the art and lore of fishing for Atlantic salmon on the fly. Depending on the time of year and availability, guests can fish the Rivers Tweed, Tay, Dee, and Spey. This is a great opportunity to Spey cast with a real ghillie on some of the most famous waters in the world. Most of these waters are open from February through October and tend to fish best in late spring and fall.

There are also countless options to fish for trout and grayling. Guests can fish for wild browns on Highland rivers and streams or on lochs (lakes), many of which are not far from cities of interest. There are options for both walk-and-wade fishing and fishing stillwaters by boat. Year-round with some of the best hatches occurring in late-April, May and June.

In addition to the classic salmon and trout fisheries, guests may also elect to fish for pike or saltwater polluck. The pike are fierce predators that range from 5-20 pounds, and guests are welcome to fish for them with fly or conventional tackle. The saltwater pollock of Scotland is a handsome, hard-fighting fish that can provide excellent sport fishing for fly anglers. This fishing can be done from the shore (somewhat physical), but most often is done from a cabin cruiser. Fly fishing with sinking heads is very effective, but guests can also choose from a range of conventional methods. Much of this fishing takes place in the Highlands, Berwickshire (near Edinburgh) or on the breathtakingly beautiful Isle of Skye.
